Euro area sees 2.9% yearly retail drop in September 2023

In September 2023, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade decreased by 0.3 per cent in the euro area and by 0.2 per cent in the European Union (EU), compared with August 2023. Compared with September 2022, the calendar adjusted retail sales index decreased by 2.9 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in the euro area and by 2.7 per cent YoY in the EU.

In August 2023, the retail trade volume decreased by 0.7 per cent in the euro area and by 0.5 per cent in the EU, Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU, said in a press release.

In the euro area in September 2023, compared with August 2023, the volume of retail trade decreased by 1.9 per cent for non-food products and by 0.9 per cent for automotive fuels. In the EU, the volume of retail trade decreased by 1.8 per cent for non-food products, while it increased by 0.1 per cent for automotive fuels.

Among member states for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases in the total retail trade volume were registered in Slovakia at -2.0 per cent, Sweden at -1.1 per cent, and Germany and the Netherlands—both at -0.8 per cent. The highest increases were observed in Slovenia at 1.1 per cent, Poland at 1.0 per cent, and Denmark at 0.9 per cent.

In the euro area in September 2023, compared with September 2022, the volume of retail trade decreased by 7.5 per cent for automotive fuels and by 3.4 per cent for non-food products. In the EU, the retail trade volume decreased by 6.9 per cent for automotive fuels and by 3.2 per cent for non-food products.

Among member states for which data are available, the largest yearly decreases in the total retail trade volume were registered in Slovenia at -17.0 per cent, Belgium at -8.4 per cent, and Hungary at -7.3 per cent. The highest increases were observed in Spain at 7.5 per cent, Cyprus at 4.1 per cent, and Luxembourg at 2.6 per cent.
