Woolworths reports 5.3% sales rise to R43 bn in H1 FY21

Woolworths Holdings Limited (WHL), a South African retail company, reported 5.3 per cent turnover and concession sales growth to R43.0 billion (rand) in the first half (H1) fiscal 2021 ended on December 27, 2020 compared to R40.9 billion in the same period prior year. Company’s profit for the period rose 75.7 per cent to R2.7 billion (H1 FY19: R1.5 billion).
 
Gross profit during the 26 weeks period was R14.5 billion (R14.1 billion). Whereas, operating profit grew to R3.8 billion (R3.2 billion).
 
Woolworths fashion, beauty and home segment sales dropped 11.2 per cent to R6.4 billion (R7.2 billion). Womenswear and menswear sales were down. On the other hand, kidswear grew market share and home and beauty were the strongest performing groups during the period. Online sales for the segment increased 18.8 per cent. 
 
Company’s food segment sales during H1 FY21 were up 12.1 per cent to R18.6 billion (R16.6 billion). David Jones sales grew 5.3 per cent to R8.2 billion (R7.8 billion) and Country Road group sales increased 9.4 per cent to R5.9 billion (R5.4 billion) despite the Victoria lockdown and lower footfall in CBD and airport stores.
