Bangladesh’s overall inflation eased in August, but still remained in double digits for the second consecutive month. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) recorded overall inflation at 10.49 per cent in the month—down from 11.66 per cent in July.

The BBS update showed inflation was higher in rural areas than urban areas in the month. Around 66 per cent of the total population lives in rural areas and faced inflation at 10.95 per cent in August compared with 10.01 per cent in urban areas.

The double-digit inflation was also higher than the month’s wage rate growth of 7.96 per cent.

The double digit inflation in the last two months puts the average inflation in this fiscal (July 2024–June 2025) at 11.07 per cent, which is almost close to the average inflation of 11.15 per cent recorded in fiscal 2010-11, according to domestic media outlets.

Finance, commerce and science and technology adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said on August 5 that a quick fall in prices of all essential commodities was unlikely to happen.
