In December last year, the same dropped by 0.6 per cent MoM in the euro area and by 0.7 per cent MoM in the EU.
The calendar-adjusted retail sales index decreased by 1 per cent year on year (YoY) in the euro area and by 0.6 per cent YoY in the EU in January this year.
The highest monthly increases in the total retail trade volume were recorded in Luxembourg (7.6 per cent), Romania (3.8 per cent) and Cyprus (1.5 per cent). The largest decreases were observed in Estonia (minus 2.6 per cent), Slovakia (minus 1 per cent) and Latvia (minus 0.8 per cent).
The largest annual decreases in the total retail trade volume were recorded in Estonia (minus 6.7 per cent), Belgium (minus 3.8 per cent) and Finland (minus 2.9 per cent). The highest increases were observed in Luxembourg (7.2 per cent), Romania (6.7 per cent) and Denmark (5.9 per cent).
