India's power consumption drops to 130.57 BU in Apr 2023

India's power consumption fell for the second consecutive month by 1.1 per cent to 130.57 billion units (BU) in April this year, as widespread rains led people to use fewer cooling appliances compared to the previous year. Consumption was also hit in March due to rains.

In April last year, power consumption stood at 132.02 BU, higher than 117.08 BU in April 2021, government data showed.

Experts hope consumption and demand would grow beginning May due to further improvement in economic activities as well as a rise in temperature, a news agency reported.

Peak power demand met, which is the highest supply in a day, rose to 215.88 GW in April this year. The figure stood at 207.23 GW in April 2022 and 182.37 GW in April 2021.

The power ministry estimates this figure may touch 229 GW this summer.
