India’s ministry for ports, shipping and waterways wants to raise the share of renewable energy to 60 per cent of the total power demand of each of its major ports from less than 10 per cent now, minister handling the portfolio Sarbananda Sonowal said. The ports also aim to reduce carbon emissions per tonne of cargo handled by 30 per cent by 2030, he said.

As envisaged in the National Hydrogen Mission, his ministry has identified Paradip Port, Deendayal Port and V.O. Chidambarar Port for developing these as hydrogen hubs, capable of handling, storage and generation of green hydrogen by 2030, he said.

The minister said this at a recent meeting in Mumbai of the consultative committee for the ministry that focused on green ports and green shipping, an official release said.

Under the Green Shipping initiative, major ports have initiated activities to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the port and shipping sector.

These include shore-to-ship power, use of electrically-powered port equipment, use of alternate fuels, storage and bunkering facilities for environment-friendly fuels, transition towards renewable sources of energy.
