The state government of Kerala has decided to reopen three khadi spinning mills in Eranakulam district to commemorate its second anniversary. These mills were shut down back in 1990s. The government has coordinated with the Khadi Village and Industries Board and the panchayats of the districts where the mills are located, for reopening them.
The mills are located in Kutta in Puthenkurishu panchayat, Veettoor in Mazhuvannoor panchayat and Pinarmunda in Kunnathunad panchayat. Women, at least 18 years of age and willing to work, are being trained to work in these mills, said a report in a leading English daily quoting K K Chandini, project officer of district Khadi Village and Industries Board. They will receive ₹350 per day along with some other benefits. She added that these mills will infuse a renewed energy in the khadi industry of the state.
The refurbishment of the mills is being carried out with the district panchayat fund which amounts to ₹38,12,500. Each mill measures approximately 2,000 square feet. They are slated to start before the end of this month.
The Eranakulam district of Kerala has over 7 weaving centres and 17 spinning mills that provide employment to close to 320 people. (KD)
