To maintain competitive edge of businesses amid the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war and the shocks of the pandemic, Bangladesh’s Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) recently urged the government not to reduce subsidy on energy for at least a year more despite a probable suggestion by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reduce it.

MCCI president Mohammad Saiful Islam urged the government not to keep the price of domestic gas as per the price of imported energy.

A credit support of $4.7 billion has already been confirmed to the country by the IMF. In this fiscal (FY23), the government aims to offer energy subsidies worth Taka 17,000 crore, including Taka 6,000 crore against import of LNG.

But government bodies have sent a subsidy demand of Taka 32,500 crore in the power sector and Taka 19,358 crore in the energy sector, according to Bangladeshi media reports.

MCCI feels entrepreneurs would have to pay additional 9 to 17 per cent tariff on export of products following the graduation from the least developed country status in 2026.
