  • Granting GI status to tangail saree highlights Bangladesh's dedication to preserve its cultural heritage; showcase distinctive products globally.
  • As GI recognition process progresses, stakeholders hope tangail saree will be officially recognised.
The Industries Ministry has announced its plans to issue a journal for granting Geographical Indication (GI) status to the tangail saree, shortly after India bestowed GI recognition upon the ‘tangail saree of Bengal'.

Zakia Sultana, senior secretary of the Industries Ministry, confirmed that the application for GI status for the tangail saree has been accepted for publication in the journal.

According to the protocol, a gazette will be published two months after the journal's publication.

During this period, any objections can be raised and if objections are raised, the final approval will be granted through a gazette after addressing the concerns.

This declaration follows Sultana's directive to stakeholders to prepare documents seeking GI recognition for the tangail saree.

This directive came in response to public outcry questioning why Bangladesh had not yet secured GI recognition, despite being a legitimate contender.

The move to grant GI status to the tangail saree underscores Bangladesh's commitment to safeguarding its cultural heritage and promoting its unique products on the global stage.

This recognition not only enhances the prestige of the tangail saree but also contributes to the economic prosperity of the region by protecting its traditional industries and fostering innovation.

With the GI recognition process underway, stakeholders are hopeful that the tangail saree will soon receive the official acknowledgment it deserves, solidifying its place as an iconic symbol of Bangladesh's rich textile heritage.
