Bayer's new hybrid cotton seeds with higher GP

Bayer Crop Sciences conducted tests for its Surpass-Firstclass hybrid cotton seeds, a high lint cotton variety, in 30 villages of Wardha district, Maharashtra, which generated good results. While most Indian hybrids have a GP of 28-32 per cent, Bayer developed two varieties with GP of 38-42 per cent, which is similar to the best cotton grown across the world.

"Now, the government should develop a mechanism to measure GP at the purchase point of ginners, with higher minimum support price (MSP) for higher GP,” a leading daily quoted Sharad Ramekar, market development manager at Bayer as saying. “This will increase profit for farmers and ginners."

“We have been monitoring GP of cotton varieties in the country and the Bayer claims are not exaggerated,” Nagpur unit in charge of Central Institute for Research in Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), Sudeep Shukla told the daily. “If GP is considered a major factor in deciding cotton price, farmers as well as ginners could benefit."
