The China-Africa Textile Company is facing a lot of challenges like power blackouts and shortage of cotton lint in Malawi, according to its general manager Huang Hai, who recently said while the company requires 20,000 metric tonnes of cotton lint per year, farmers in the country can provide only half of that amount, thereby affecting production.

He also complained that besides affecting the economy, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the company’s production and the purchase of the cash crop from farmers in Malawi this year, a news agency reported.

To avert shortage of cotton, minister of trade Sosten Gwengwe had earlier advised Malawians to feed factories in the country with raw material on priority so that they should be able to add value to the products before exporting them.

Gwengwe, who recently visited the company based in Salima, said he is impressed with the contribution cotton investment companies are making to boost the sector in the country.
