According to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro, China’s electricity consumption had reached 78,05,656 million kWh in 2021 from 71,15,077 million kWh of 2020. It was recorded at 68,02,698 million kWh in 2019, 64,50,426 million kWh in 2018, 60,57,175 million kWh in 2017 and 55,85,625 million kWh in 2016. Among top 10 largest electricity consumers, China’s consumption grew 6.92 per cent during 2016 to 2021.
Among top 10 largest consumers, India’s growth rate of electricity consumption was second highest with an annual growth of 4.43 per cent during the same period. Its electricity consumption grew to 14,42,750 million kWh in 2021 from 13,28,658 million kWh of 2020. The country had consumed 13,42,052 million kWh electricity in 2019, 13,12,596 million kWh in 2018, 12,28,624 million kWh in 2017 and 11,61,543 million kWh in 2016.
The US remained the second largest electricity consuming country in the world after China. However, its annual growth was just 0.29 per cent during the period under review. Its electricity consumption inched up to 39,79,279 million kWh in 2021 from 38,97,894 million kWh of 2020. The country had consumed 39,21,110 million kWh in 2016, 38,88,305 million kWh in 2017, 40,32,628 million kWh in 2018 and 39,89,378 million kWh in 2019.
Among the top five largest electricity consumers, the annual growth rate was 1.80 per cent in Russia. Its total consumption reached 9,96,442 million kWh in 2021 from 9,11,413 million kWh of 2016. Japan, the fifth largest consumer, witnessed a trend of degrowth of 0.93 per cent annually in electricity consumption to reach at 9,13,078 million kWh in 2021. Its consumption was noted at 956,720 million in kWh in 2016, as per TexPro.
During 2021, Brazil’s electricity consumption was 5,77,295 million kWh (annual growth of 2.35%), South Korea 5,67,672 kWh (1.90%), Canada 5,54,744 kWh (0.23%), Germany 5,11,660 kWh (-1.07%) and France 4,47,447 kWh (-0.42%). These are other nations among top 10 largest electricity consumers in the world.
