China leads other countries in renewable energy capacity growth as its total installed capacity for renewable energy generation has risen to 1.1 billion kilowatts, which is an increase of around 90 times, during the past decade. Renewable energy has also become the main source of the country’s newly added installed generation capacity, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA).

The NEA also revealed that China’s generation capacity of hydropower, wind, solar, and biomass ranking is higher than that of other countries in the world. Moreover, the country’s wind and solar power combined installed capacity has extended to 670 million kW, which is nearly 90 times that in 2012. While China’s renewable energy generation capacity is anticipated to make up more than 50 per cent of the total energy generation capacity, the generation capacity for wind and solar power is to increase twofold during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) period.

The nation is also the world’s largest producer of wind and solar energy as well as the largest domestic and outbound investor in renewable energy, Chinese media reports said quoting an analyst. China’s recently added installed capacity for renewable energy generation climbed to 43.49 million kW, which is 82.1 per cent of the country’s newly added power generation installed capacity, the NEA stated.

The country is also now able to independently design and manufacture the world’s largest megawatt-scale hydraulic turbine set. Solar power generation technology has undergone rapid development; 10MW offshore wind turbines have joined volume production. Consequently, the range of development and utilisation of renewable energy in China was equivalent to 753 million metric tons of standard coal last year. This ended up reducing 2.07 million tons of carbon dioxide, 400,000 tons of sulphur dioxide, and 450, 000 tons of nitrogen oxide, according to Chinese media reports.
