Chinese Premier Li Qiang recently expressed China's willingness to expand practical cooperation in economy, trade, and other fields with Ethiopia. The discussion took place during Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's recent visit to China for the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.
According to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro, China's fabric exports to Ethiopia have yet to fully recover from the impact of COVID-19. In 2019, fabric exports were valued at $194.542 million, which plummeted to $110.144 million in 2020. While there was a slight recovery to $126.008 million in 2021, it again declined to $120.778 million in 2022.
China's yarn exports to Ethiopia stood at $69.726 million for the first eight months of this year. The figures show a decrease from $107.781 million in the same period of 2022. The yarn trade was previously recorded at $55.575 million in January to August 2020 and $56.517 million in January to August 2019.
During the period from January to August 2023, China exported readymade garments worth $44.883 million to Ethiopia. This marks a sharp decline of 65.84 per cent from $131.401 million during the corresponding period in 2022. China exported apparel worth $185.948 million in 2022, $308.448 million in 2021, $181.328 million in 2020, and $158.829 million in 2019, according to TexPro.
