China’s foreign trade of goods has marked a 9.4 per cent year-on-year rise amounting to 19.8 trillion yuan (about $2.94 trillion) in the first half of this year. While exports increased by 13.2 per cent year-on-year to 11.14 trillion yuan, imports grew by 4.8 per cent from last year to 8.66 trillion yuan, as per the General Administration of Customs (GAC).

China’s foreign trade growth jumped to 14.3 per cent in June, compared with 9.5 per cent in May and 0.1 per cent in April.

“The growth of foreign trade picked up significantly in May and June,” said Li Kuiwen, spokesperson for the GAC. “In particular, the rapid recovery of imports and exports in the Yangtze River Delta led to a marked rebound in the overall growth of China’s foreign trade.”

The improvement in COVID-19 situation, along with pro-growth policies put in place by the government, has enabled Chinese enterprises to restart production since May, leading to a jump in foreign trade.
