China's power production sees 6.1% YoY growth in Apr 2023

China’s industrial power generation in April 2023 experienced an increase of 6.1 per cent year-on-year (YoY). This growth accounts for enterprises with an annual main business turnover of at least 20 million yuan, approximately $2.84 million, as per the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

During this period, the total power generation by these enterprises reached 658.4 billion kilowatt-hours. A closer look at the figures reveals that thermal power generation expanded by 11.5 per cent, nuclear power output rose by 5.7 per cent, and wind power generation experienced a significant surge of 20.9 per cent YoY—a rise of 20.7 percentage points from March.

However, not all sources of power saw an increase. Solar power generation decreased by 3.3 per cent, and hydropower output experienced a substantial drop of 25.9 per cent YoY.

The first four months of the year witnessed a total power generation increase of 3.4 per cent YoY, reaching 2.73 trillion kilowatt-hours, further demonstrating China’s growing industrial power capacity.
