  • Cotton yarn prices are experiencing a varied trend in south India as the festival season approaches.
  • In most regions, prices have declined owing to tepid demand.
  • Tiruppur's market remained stable.
  • Mumbai also saw a dip in prices, driven by poor demand from the weaving industry.
  • Traders indicate that festive buying is insufficient to uplift the market.
South India is witnessing a mixed trend in cotton yarn prices. Most varieties have seen a decline of ₹5-8 per kg due to lacklustre demand before the festival season. However, prices remained stable in Tiruppur, despite weak demand. Traders noted that current festive buying isn't enough to lift market sentiments. Additionally, a stagnant export demand and higher fabric and garment imports have further dampened the market.

Mumbai's cotton yarn market is experiencing a decline in prices across most varieties and counts, with a drop of ₹5-8 per kg. According to Bharat Shah, a trader from Maharashtra who spoke to Fibre2Fashion, "The demand from the weaving industry was very poor. Traders and millers were compelled to attract buyers by lowering prices. The lacklustre retail buying has led to uncertainty throughout the textile value chain.”

In Mumbai, 60 carded yarn of warp and weft varieties was sold at ₹1,420-1,440 and ₹1,300-1,350 per 5 kg (excluding GST), respectively. Other prices include 60 combed warp ₹322-328 per kg, 80 carded weft ₹1,400-1,440 per 4.5 kg, 44/46 carded warp ₹250-255 per kg, 40/41 carded warp ₹236-242 per kg and 40/41 combed warp ₹262-266 per kg, as per Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.

In Tiruppur, the cotton yarn market has maintained a steady trend, even amid slower demand from the weaving industry. A local trader told F2F, "Festival demand for cotton yarn was negligible. The existing stock in the textile value chain was sufficient to meet festive demand. Buyers are currently only looking to purchase cotton yarn for immediate needs."

Prices in the Tiruppur market were noted as 30 count combed cotton yarn at ₹263-268 per kg (excluding GST), 34 count combed cotton yarn at ₹271-276 per kg, 40 count combed cotton yarn at ₹282-287 per kg, 30 count carded cotton yarn at ₹238-243 per kg, 34 count carded cotton yarn at ₹242-247 per kg and 40 count carded cotton yarn at ₹250-255 per kg, according to TexPro.

In Gujarat, cotton prices have remained stable despite limited buying and concerns about crop damage due to a Pink Bollworm attack. Prices of kapas (unginned cotton) increased by ₹10 to ₹1,450-1,600 per maund of 20 kg. Traders note that spinning mills are cautious about new purchases due to lower fabric demand and higher moisture levels in new cotton. Concerns also persist about reduced production due to the pest attack. In the Gujarat market, Shankar-6 cotton is priced between ₹60,300-60,700 per candy of 356 kg, with an estimated arrival of 13,000 bales of 170 kg each. All India arrival is estimated at 35,000-36,000 bales.
