  • In Gujarat, cotton prices were positive due to demand from spinners and crop loss due to heavy rain.
  • Regular purchases from spinning mills are expected for the next few months.
Cotton yarn prices remained stable in Mumbai and Tiruppur markets in south India, despite an uptick in demand today. Some traders suggested that a decrease in yarn prices could occur, but a rising trend would only be expected if demand from the downstream industry increases. These market fluctuations have left some traders concerned about conflicting market signals. Even though cotton prices have risen recently, demand for fabric has not been as robust. Contradictory signs have also been observed in various weaving centres across Maharashtra.

In Mumbai, cotton yarn prices were roughly the same as previous levels. The market displayed mixed signals about demand and production activities. Govind Mundra, a Mumbai-based trader, told Fibre2Fashion, "Some weaving centres in Maharashtra are showing signs of improved demand. However, other weaving centres are experiencing weaker production activities. There's uncertainty about the resurgence of demand in the upcoming weeks."

In Mumbai, 60 count carded yarn of warp and weft varieties was sold at ₹1,420-1,445 and ₹1,290-1,330 per 5 kg (excluding GST), respectively. Other prices include 60 combed warp at ₹325-330 per kg, 80 carded weft at ₹1,325-1,350 per 4.5 kg, 44/46 carded warp at ₹254-260 per kg, 40/41 carded warp at ₹242-246 per kg and 40/41 combed warp at ₹270-275 per kg, according to Fibre2Fashion's market insight tool TexPro.

In Tiruppur, there was increased demand for knitting yarn as buyers showed interest in securing new deals. However, this did not boost yarn prices, which remained stable. A Tiruppur trader told F2F, "Prices remained the same, despite improved demand from the downstream industry. The current positive market sentiment is expected to persist."

Prices in the Tiruppur market were noted as 30 count combed cotton yarn at ₹255-262 per kg (excluding GST), 34 count combed cotton yarn at ₹265-272 per kg, 40 count combed cotton yarn at ₹275-282 per kg, 30 count carded cotton yarn at ₹230-236 per kg, 34 count carded cotton yarn at ₹238-245 per kg and 40 count carded cotton yarn at ₹241-246 per kg, as per TexPro.

In Gujarat, cotton prices remained positive due to high demand from spinners and reports of crop losses from heavy rains in central India. Trade sources revealed that spinning mills were making regular purchases for the next 2-3 months due to insufficient stock. There were reports suggesting that the cotton crop in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, as well as other nearby regions, was severely affected by heavy rains. Many farmers have had to replant cotton after the crops were washed away by floods. Cotton prices increased by ₹500 per candy (356 kg). Shankar-6 cotton was quoted between ₹57,500-58,000 per candy. Cotton arrivals were below 5,000 bales of 170 kg in Gujarat, while all-India arrivals were estimated at 20,000-22,000 bales of 170 kg.
