The consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation rate in the Netherlands in October this year was minus 0.4 per cent, according to a flash estimate by Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

In September, consumer goods and services were 0.2 per cent more expensive year on year (YoY).

The negative inflation in October is entirely due to the fact that energy prices were extremely high in October last year, CBS said in a release.

Excluding energy, inflation amounted to 5.1 per cent in the month, according to the estimate. It stood at 5.5 per cent in September.

In the first half of this year, inflation excluding energy and motor fuels was above the current level, peaking at 8.1 per cent in February and March.

The drop in inflation does not mean that prices fell in October this year compared to September last year, CBS noted.

According to the flash estimate, consumer prices were 0.5 per cent higher in October this year compared to September.
