The Indian government is working on a framework to assess its logistics costs and is likely to get a realistic estimate by September, according to Sumita Dawra, special secretary in the department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT).

Current government estimates show India's logistics cost stands at about 13-14 per cent of its gross domestic product (GDP).

The framework, which would include elements of this cost and how to measure that, is being formulated with the help of a technical partner, she told a recent Confederation of Indian Industry conclave on trade facilitation.

A workshop on the logistics cost framework was conducted by the department in March, and a task force was set up to formulate a framework to determine the cost, a news agency reported.

The task force members include representatives from the NITI Aayog, the ministry of statistics and programme implementation, the National Council of Applied Economic Research and academic experts.

Continued government focus on creating a paperless trading ecosystem through measures like faceless assessment, risk management system and direct port delivery have started showing results at the ground level, Sanjay Budhia, chairman of the CII national committee on EXIM and managing director of the Patton Group, said.
