EU emissions drop 2.6% as GDP rises 1% in Q2 2024

The second quarter (Q2) of 2024 saw an estimated 790 million tonnes of CO2-equivalents (CO2-eq) of greenhouse gas emissions from the European Union (EU) economy, a 2.6 per cent drop from the same quarter in 2023 (812 million tonnes of CO2-eq). The EU saw a 1 per cent growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in Q2 2024 compared to the same quarter in 2023, as per Eurostat.

In Q2 2024, the economic sectors that were responsible for the largest reductions were electricity and gas supply (-12.1 per cent) and households (-4.2 per cent), compared to Q2 2023. The greenhouse gas emissions were estimated to have decreased in 19 EU countries when compared with the same quarter of 2023. The largest reductions in greenhouse gases were estimated for the Netherlands (-9.1 per cent), Bulgaria (-6.3 per cent), Austria and Hungary (each -5.9 per cent), Eurostat said in a press release.

Five EU nations—Ireland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Austria—saw a drop in GDP out of the 19 that were expected to have reduced their emissions. The GDP of the other 14 EU nations—Poland, Denmark, Croatia, Spain, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Portugal, Hungary, Belgium, Italy, Czechia, the Netherlands, France, and Germany—grew while their emissions declined.
