The EU unemployment rate was 6 per cent in the month—down from 6.1 per cent in February and stable compared with March last year.
Eurostat estimates that 13.258 million persons in the EU, of whom 11.087 million in the euro area, were unemployed in March this year.
Compared with February 2024, unemployment decreased by 74,000 in the EU and by 94,000 in the euro area in March. Unemployment in the month increased by 175,000 in the EU and decreased by 51,000 in the euro area compared with March last year.
In March this year, 2.858 million young persons under 25 were unemployed in the EU, of whom 2.259 million were in the euro area. The youth unemployment rate in the month was 14.6 per cent in the EU—down from 14.7 per cent in February, and 14.1 per cent in the euro area—down from 14.4 per cent in the previous month.
Compared with February this year, youth unemployment in the month decreased by 11,000 in the EU and by 30,000 in the euro area. Youth unemployment increased by 150,000 in the EU and by 36,000 in the euro area compared with March last year.
In March 2024, the unemployment rate for women was 6.4 per cent in the EU—stable compared with February. The rate for men in the month was 5.7 per cent—down from 5.8 per cent in the previous month.
In the euro area, the unemployment rate for women was 7 per cent in the month—stable compared with February. The rate for men was 6 per cent—down from 6.1 per cent in the previous month.
