Former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo recently urged the government to ban import of Chinese adire fabric and revive the domestic textile industry to boost local production of adire.

Obasanjo said this while declaring open the 2024 Canada Trade Mission pre-conference session held in Abeokuta in Ogun state.

Adire textile is a type of dyed cloth made in south-west Nigeria by Yoruba women using a variety of resist-dyeing techniques.

“Let us beg the government to do all they can to protect our local production of adire so that the Chinese will not have access to bastardise it for us,” he was quoted as saying by a Nigerian newspaper.

The government should also set up formal training centres where people can learn how to produce adire through certified courses, he added.
