Insights

  • Extended winter in north India has decreased viscose yarn prices in Surat.
  • Polyester and polyester-cotton yarn prices stay steady after a recent rise, buoyed by uniform season demand and quality control orders.
  • In Ludhiana, various yarn prices are reported, with summer demand stabilizing.
  • Mumbai market reported stable viscose yarn prices.

The extended winter in north India has led to a dampening in viscose yarn prices. In the Surat market, viscose yarn prices have decreased by ₹2-3 per kg, while in Mumbai, the prices have remained stable. Traders anticipate an improvement in viscose yarn purchases once the winter season concludes in north India.

Last week, polyester and polyester-cotton (PC) yarn prices were stable after a recent increase, driven by higher demand. The uniform season has also boosted the demand for polyester and PC yarn. Additionally, quality control orders (QCOs) on the polyester value chain have positively influenced the yarn trade.

A trader from the Ludhiana market told Fibre2Fashion, “PC cotton yarn prices had seen a steep rise due to summer demand until last week. However, the demand has now steadied after the stocking of raw material by the downstream industry.” In Ludhiana, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) traded at ₹203-213 per kg (GST inclusive); 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) was sold at ₹190-200 per kg; 30 count polyester spun was priced at ₹153-163 per kg (GST inclusive); and recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) was quoted at ₹73-75 per kg, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.

A Surat market source noted the absence of major festivals in the near future, which could potentially boost demand for viscose yarn-made women's garments. The prolonged winter in north India has also delayed summer demand for viscose yarn. In this market, 30 count poly spun yarn was traded at ₹136-137 per kg (GST extra), and 40 count poly spun yarn at ₹148-152 per kg. The price for 30 viscose compact yarn (local) was ₹195-197 per kg (GST extra), with viscose yarn prices easing by ₹2-3 per kg.

However, viscose yarn prices have stabilised in the Mumbai market. A Mumbai trader told Fibre2Fashion, “Viscose yarn is experiencing a bearish tone as there's no immediate festival demand. Demand for ladies' wear is expected to remain subdued for a longer period. The weaving industry is slowing fabric production in anticipation of limited demand from the garment industry.” Imported viscose vertex yarn was priced at ₹178-183 per kg, while local ring-spun viscose yarn was quoted at ₹187-190 per kg, according to TexPro.

In north India, cotton prices have remained steady due to average demand from spinning mills. Traders have reported a consistent demand and supply in the cotton fibre market. The cotton arrival was estimated at 20,500 bales of 170 kg in the region, with state-wise arrivals as follows: Punjab 2,500 bales, Haryana 6,000 bales, upper Rajasthan 6,000 bales, and lower Rajasthan 6,000 bales. The prices in Punjab were ₹5,425-5,525 per maund, in Haryana ₹5,400-5,500, and in upper Rajasthan ₹5,300-5,500. Bikaner line cotton was sold at ₹5,525-5,600 per maund, and prices in lower Rajasthan were noted at ₹52,000-54,000 per candy of 356 kg.
