Freight transport up on China's cross-border highways in Jan-Feb 2023

The New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor cross-border highways have seen a surge in the volume of freight transport during January and February 2023, with a growing number of trucks involved. In the first two months of 2023, the total number of truck trips carrying goods via the cross-border highways reached 903, transporting goods worth about 683 million yuan ($99.2 million).

This was a significant increase of 502 and 625 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in January and February, respectively, according to the highway logistics base of Chongqing Municipality in southwest China.

A truck leaving from Chongqing and crossing the border via the land checkpoint of Mohan in Yunnan province arrives in Vientiane, Laos, in about four days, covering a distance of approximately 2,800 km. Before the introduction of the cross-border highway freight service, it required around a month for cargo to arrive in ASEAN countries via water transport.

The cross-border highway freight service was launched in April 2016 to promote trade between western China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), by offering safe and timely delivery of goods.

Chongqing, an inland city of China, marked a total of 815.84 billion yuan earned from foreign trade in 2022, which is an increase of 2 per cent from 2021.
