  • A global coalition urged companies sourcing from Bangladesh to act responsibly amid ongoing challenges in the garment sector.
  • They highlighted concerns over unpaid wages and excessive overtime, recommending enhanced human rights due diligence and responsible purchasing.
  • The coalition emphasised adherence to international standards for workers' well-being.

A coalition of prominent international organizations, including Amfori, Cascale, Ethical Trade Denmark, Ethical Trade Norway, the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), ETI Sweden, the Fair Labor Association, Fair Wear Foundation, and Mondiaal FNV, have issued a joint call to companies operating in and sourcing from Bangladesh to conduct their business responsibly.

This appeal comes in light of recent events in Bangladesh that continue to have significant repercussions on the country's garment, footwear, and accessories industries.

The coalition highlighted ongoing concerns, such as reports of unpaid or reduced wages for workers in July and the extended overtime being demanded of factory employees. These issues underscore the critical need for responsible business practices to address the adverse impacts on workers as the situation in Bangladesh continues to evolve, the coalition said in a joint statement.

The organisations collectively recommend that companies uphold their commitments to suppliers, conduct enhanced human rights due diligence (eHRDD), and implement responsible purchasing practices to mitigate potential negative impacts on workers and supply chains.

Their guidance is grounded in a commitment to international human rights laws and standards, including the International Labour Organization (ILO) core conventions and the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). The coalition emphasised that these standards must be adhered to in all circumstances, especially during periods of civil unrest and transition, as is currently the case in Bangladesh.

The coalition urges companies to conduct human rights due diligence in line with the UNGPs to better understand the rapidly changing situation in Bangladesh. This process is vital for identifying and mitigating risks, as well as providing remedies where necessary. Additionally, they stress the importance of meaningful stakeholder engagement, particularly with workers and their representatives, as defined by the OECD.

The organisations also call on companies to implement responsible purchasing practices in accordance with the Common Framework for Responsible Purchasing Practices. This approach is seen as essential to maintaining the integrity of supply chains and safeguarding workers' rights.

The coalition has been actively engaging with affected stakeholders in Bangladesh to monitor the impacts on workers and the industry. By working together, these organisations aim to facilitate a collective response to the challenges faced by the sector.

Together, these organisations represent over 3,000 international brands, retailers, suppliers, and workers involved in global supply chains. Their member companies source a significant share of products and services from factories in Bangladesh and are committed to responsible business conduct and sustainable trade practices.

In their joint statement, the coalition expressed optimism for a stable future for Bangladesh, underpinned by responsible business practices that prioritise the well-being of workers and the sustainability of the industry.
