The EITC law had raised the maximum tax credit for American workers without dependent children to about $1,500.
Enacted under the 2021 American Rescue Plan, CTC offered a maximum credit of $3,600 per child depending on age and family income. Harris’ version of the legislation would expand the benefit for middle- to lower-income families for a year after a child is born.
“We will provide $6,000 in tax relief to families during the first year of a child’s life,” she said.
“As president, I will be laser-focused on creating opportunities for the middle class that advance their economic security, stability and dignity,” she told a campaign event in Raleigh, North Carolina.
“Together, we will build what I call an opportunity economy—an economy where everyone can compete and have a real chance to succeed,” she said.
She said she will focus on cutting needless bureaucracy and unnecessary regulatory red tape and encouraging innovative technologies while protecting consumers and creating a stable business environment with consistent and transparent rules of the road, according to her campaign speech uploaded on the White House website.
“When I am elected president, I will make it a top priority to bring down costs and increase economic security for all Americans,” she said.
She said Donald Trump’s plans to impose what is, in effect, a national sales tax on everyday products and basic necessities that we import from other countries will ‘devastate’ Americans.
“Donald Trump fights for billionaires and large corporations. We—I will fight to give money back to working- and middle-class Americans,” she added.
