The Netherlands-based IDH-the Sustainable Trade Initiative and the Apparel Impact Institute recently launched the Tier 1 Vietnam programme, building on the earlier work of Clean by Design and the Race to the Top Vietnam programme. The new program aims to reduce the negative impact of the apparel sector on the environment in line with the Paris Agreement and science-based targets (SBTs).

The initiative will offer support by linking financial savings to the positive environmental impact in the apparel and footwear supply chain in tier 1 facilities, according to an IDH press release.

In earlier work (Race to the Top), it has been observed that a cohort of 2nd tier facilities save 10.198 tonnes carbon dioxide per year, the equivalent of 2040 cars on the road for a full year. Electricity savings compared to 153.551 laptops turned on for a year.

Leveraging on the work from the Race to the Top, the Tier 1 Vietnam programme will scale this further and continue to reduce emissions.

"We believe that implementing environmental projects in tier 1 facilities can save significant energy use (coal, gas, wood & kWh electricity reduction), as well as millions of dollars, influencing tier 1 programme expansion plans in Vietnam and other key countries while reducing carbon emissions," the press release added.
