India's WPI inflation rises to 2.36% in October 2024

The annual rate of inflation based on all India wholesale price index (WPI) number is 2.36 per cent (provisional) for the month of October 2024 (over October 2023), an increase over 1.84 per cent registered in the previous month, according to the ministry of commerce and industry.

The month over month change in WPI for the month of October 2024 stood at 0.97 per cent as compared to September 2024.

“Inflation in October 2024 is primarily due to increase in prices of food articles, manufacture of food products, other manufacturing, manufacture of machinery and equipment, manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, etc,” the Office of the Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the ministry of commerce and industry, said.

The official WPI for all commodities (Base: 2011-12 = 100) for the month of October 2024 increased to 156.1 from 154.6 in the previous month.

The index for manufactured products (weight 64.23 per cent) for October 2024 increased to 142.5 from 141.8 in September 2024. The index for ‘Manufacture of Textiles’ sub-group increased slightly to 135.9 from 135.8 in September, while the index for ‘Manufacture of Wearing Apparel’ increased to 153.9 from 153.5 in September.

The index for primary articles (weight 22.62 per cent) increased by 2.35 per cent to 200.3 in October from 195.7 for the month of September, while that for fuel and power (weight 13.15 per cent) declined by 0.27 per cent to 146.5 in October from 146.9 in the previous month.
