In 2022, the total yarn export from India was reported to be 1,555.808 million kg, with the total shipment value amounting to $5.384 billion, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro. The average export price of yarn during that year was substantial at $3.46 billion. Consequently, the current year witnessed a decrease in the average export price of yarn by 15.89 per cent, registering at $2.91 per kg. To provide a historical context, the prices were documented at $2.98/kg in 2021, $2.25/kg in 2020, and $2.45/kg in 2019.
While the average price of yarn exports saw an upswing in 2022, the total value and quantity observed a decline compared to 2021. India exported yarn worth $7.241 billion (2.425 million kg) in 2021, $4.091 billion (1.821 million kg) in 2020, and $4.885 billion (1.994 million kg) in 2019, according to TexPro.
During January to May 2023, over 50 per cent of India's yarn exports were attributed to its top five markets: Bangladesh, Turkiye, China, Egypt, and Portugal. Bangladesh led the list, accounting for 19.46 per cent of the total shipments, with India exporting yarn products worth $416.476 million to the nation. Following Bangladesh, the exports to Turkiye were substantial at $289.302 million (13.52 per cent), followed by China at $236.918 million (11.07 per cent), Egypt with $106.669 million (4.99 per cent), and Portugal noting $99.457 million (4.65 per cent).
