India yesterday launched a ‘secured logistics document exchange’ (SLDE) along with a calculator for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to improve logistics efficiency, reduce logistics cost and promote multi-modality and sustainability. The SLDE platform will replace the manual process of generation, exchange and compliance of logistics documents with a digitised, secure and seamless system.
The launch event was attended by more than 75 participants from central ministries, banks, information technology companies, international organisations, logistics sector stakeholders and industry bodies, the ministry of commerce and industry said in a press release.India has launched a 'secured logistics document exchange' along with a greenhouse gas emissions calculator to improve logistics efficiency, reduce logistics cost and promote multi-modality and sustainability. The target is to improve India’s ranking in logistics performance index and establish indigenous India-specific metrics for continual improvement in logistics.
The ministry’s logistics division has planned specific digital initiatives with a focus on integrating the various digital systems across ministries and departments and filling gaps.
The SLDE platform will enable generation, storage and interchange of logistics-related documents digitally using Aadhaar card data and blockchain-based security protocols for data security and authentication.
It will also provide a complete audit trail of document transfer, faster execution of transaction, lower cost of shipping, reduced overall carbon footprint, easy verification of authenticity of documents and lowered risk of fraud.
The proof of concept of the platform has been developed and executed with four banks—ICICI, Axis Bank, State Bank of India and HDFC Bank—and stakeholders, including freight forwarders, exporters, importers and vessel operators.
The emission calculator compares GHG emissions across different modes and allows commodity-wise comparison of GHG emissions and total cost of transportation, including their environmental cost, between movement by road and rail. The tool is intended to facilitate appropriate modal choice.
