India’s coir exports witnessed a growth of 17.6 per cent in quantity and 37 per cent in value in fiscal 2020-21 compared to the previous fiscal, according to Coir Board chairman D Kuppuramu. Coir and coir product exports were worth ₹3,700 crore during the fiscal, with a net volume of 11.63 lakh metric tonnes.
Thoothukudi VOC port handled 57 per cent of the total coir exports, followed by Kochi and Chennai ports that handled 22 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.India's coir exports saw a growth of 17.6 per cent in quantity and 37 per cent in value in fiscal 2020-21 compared to the previous fiscal, said Coir Board chairman D Kuppuramu. While the coir export business fetched a revenue of ₹2,757 crore (9.89 lakh metric tonnes) in 2019-20, the country earned ₹3,778.98 crore in 2020-21, Kuppuramu was quoted as saying by a newspaper in south India.
Coir pith generated the highest share of 50.80 per cent of the total export of coir products, followed by tufted mats with a 21.3 per cent share in the income generated through export.
In 2020-21, 106 countries imported coir and coir products from India, with the United States being the top importer and China the second.
The Coir Board aims to earn ₹7,000 crore through exports in two years, he added.
