In two separate gazette notifications, the ministry highlighted a leaner government machinery and the need for systematic rationalisation of government bodies as the reason for abolishing the advisory bodies.
As a representative body of government agencies, growers, industry and trade, the CAB's role was to advise the government on matters pertaining to production, consumption and marketing of cotton, while also acting as a forum for liaison among the cotton textile mill industry, the cotton growers, the cotton trade and the government. The role of the JAB headed by secretary (textiles) was to advise the government on matters pertaining to jute falling within the purview of Jute and Jute Textiles Control Order-2000 including production estimates of jute and mesta.
