Indian Railways has recorded its best ever performance in terms of the output from its freight business in the financial year 2022-23 (FY23), according to preliminary data released by the national carrier. The company achieved an originating freight loading of 1,512 MT, representing an incremental loading of 94 MT over the previous best of 1,418 MT achieved in FY22, with a growth rate of around 7 per cent.The freight transport unit, or net tonne kilometre (NTKM), of Indian Railways also achieved an impressive growth rate of 10 per cent to breach the 900-billion mark for the first time, reaching 903 billion NTKMs in FY23, compared to 820 billion NTKMs achieved the previous year, ministry of railways said in a press release.

The gross freight revenues are expected to be over ₹1.6 lakh crore with a growth rate of approximately 14 per cent.
Coal was the major contributor to this growth, with Indian Railways achieving an incremental loading of 74.6 MT, followed by 8.7 MT in other goods.
