The Laotian government raised the country’s minimum wage from LAK 1,200,000 to LAK 1,300,000, during a recent monthly cabinet meeting. The new wage will be effective from May 1.

The government discussed the possibility of further increasing the minimum wage, and delegated the ministry of labour and social welfare to continue coordinating with other relevant ministries to conduct more comprehensive research on the appropriate livable minimum wage.

The government hopes to further raise the minimum wage in the third quarter this year with more insight in hand, a newspaper in the country reported.

The government has also formed a task force to probe the rising inflation, commodity prices, and exchange rates.

The cabinet meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Sonxay Siphandone.
