Maharashtra recently decided to expedite cotton procurement at centres, according to state home minister Anil Deshmukh, who recently said cotton from 100 vehicles would be purchased daily and not from 20-25 vehicles as done earlier. The minister said this after a review meeting of the agriculture department chaired by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Deshmukh said cotton procurement was stopped because of the lockdown. It was resumed on the condition of adhering to social distancing norms.

The chief minister and deputy chief minister have warned of strict action against graders who fail to ensure the purchase of cotton on this scale, a news agency reported citing an official statement.

The state has also ordered registration of offences against those selling uncertified cotton seeds in the state, Deshmukh added.
