A total of £300,000 has been invested in the centre with £100,000 out of that coming from the local business rates pool, administered by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP), according to a release from the local government.
The academy, officially launched on November 30, will offer apprenticeships and training for people who want to work in the textiles industry and for those who already hold jobs in the sector.
Trainees have already started on some of the first courses being offered by the centre.
Leicester's garment and textile sector came under fire in 2020 after a number of allegations of worker exploitation were made against manufacturing firms in the city.
