Nigeria's House of Representatives has urged the government to ban import of imitations of adire/kampala and other regional fabrics to protect the domestic market and earn foreign exchange.
Such imports have hit the domestic industry, affecting the livelihood of producers and leading to job loss, said house member Afolabi Afuape, who moved the resolution.

The Nigerian parliament’s House of Representatives recently urged the government to ban import of imitations of adire/kampala and other regional fabrics to protect the domestic market and earn foreign exchange.

Adire is an indigo-dyed fabric made in southwestern Nigeria by Yoruba women.

“The House observes that the influx of foreign imitations of adire/kampala into Nigeria’s market has negatively impacted the local industry, leading to a decline in the livelihood of local producers and job loss,” said house member Afolabi Afuape, who moved the resolution.

Failure to take timely action could lead to dire consequences for the domestic cottage industry, he cautioned, according to domestic media reports.

He requested the House to mandate the committee on commerce to collaborate with the National Directorate of Employment to initiate formal training and orientation programmes on skills, quality control, marketing and business management for all domestic fabric producers and monitor the relevant agencies in charge of evaluating the periodic progress of the cottage industry.
