  • NPA reportedly spent over $200 million on dredging the channels leading to the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), the Tin-Can Island Port, Roro Port, and container terminal in last 10 years.
  • LPC is the primary gateway for cargo into West Africa region, due to traditional volumes of trade within Nigeria and high level of accessible routes through the hinterland.
Over the past decade, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has allocated more than $200 million towards dredging operations across critical channels leading to key ports in Lagos, including the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Tin-Can Island Port, Roro Port, and container terminal.

Reports maintained this while underlining this substantial investment towards average dredging of 2.6 million cubic meters annually, underscores NPA’s commitment to enhancing maritime infrastructure and ensuring safe navigation within these vital waterways.

Further, under the leadership of managing director Muhammed Bello-Koko, NPA has also implemented a sophisticated computerised billing system to streamline the ship dues collection processes while also significantly boosting revenue generation for the federal government.

To further bolster NPA’s financial sustainability, management has also opted to optimise the official depth references and expand acceptable draft limits, thereby accommodating larger vessels and increasing cargo throughput, thus bolstering national economic growth.

Recognising LPC’s pivotal role as West Africa’s primary cargo gateway, the NPA is steadfast in its commitment to maintaining statutory water depths and ensuring safe passage for vessels entering and navigating within the ports.
