Insights

  • The cotton yarn market in north India is witnessing stagnant growth due to reduced demand and competition from cheaper Chinese fabric imports.
  • Spinning mills face rising production costs from expensive cotton, while strikes in Punjab have led to decreased supply.
  • In Ludhiana and Delhi, prices have remained steady despite these pressures.
In north India, the cotton yarn market continues to show a stable trend, hampered by sluggish demand. Trade insiders attribute this stagnation to an influx of cheaper Chinese fabric imports, which are undermining the entire textile value chain. Spinning mills are under strain, unable to offset increased production costs due to dearer cotton. Cotton’s cost has risen further owing to reduced supply amidst strikes in Punjab's wholesale markets. Meanwhile, recycled yarn prices in Panipat and rates for cotton comber and recycled polyester fibre have also remained steady.

The Ludhiana market reported stagnant prices, despite low demand. Mills struggled to increase yarn prices even as cotton costs surged. Speaking to Fibre2Fashion, a trader from the Ludhiana market noted, "Chinese fabric imports are dampening market sentiment. Lower-cost fabric from China is becoming increasingly popular among garment manufacturers, accounting for 75 per cent of fabric usage in domestic units. Previously, Indian fabric had dominated these domestic garment units."

The 30 count cotton combed yarn was sold at ₹265-275 per kg (GST inclusive); 20 and 25 count combed yarn were traded at ₹255-265 per kg and ₹260-270 per kg respectively; and carded yarn of 30 count was noted at 245-250 per kg, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.

The Delhi market observed stable prices owing to diminished demand from the downstream industry. A trader from the Delhi market informed F2F, "The market is nearly devoid of buyers due to sluggish fabric purchasing. Those who are active are seeking smaller quantities to meet their immediate requirements." In the Delhi market, 30 count combed yarn was traded at ₹267-272 per kg (GST extra), 40 count combed at ₹297-302 per kg, 30 count carded at ₹237-242 per kg and 40 count carded at ₹267-272 per kg, as per TexPro.

Recycled yarn prices in Panipat's market remained stable, unaffected by the absence of festival-driven demand. A trader indicated that although there was some domestic demand, it was insufficient to bolster market prices. Large inventories of raw materials are currently satisfying existing purchases. Recycled yarn was traded stable amid weak demand.

In Panipat, 10s recycled PC yarn (Grey) was traded at ₹77-82 per kg (GST Paid). Other varieties and counts were noted as 10s recycled PC yarn (Black) at ₹50-54 per kg, 20s recycled PC yarn (Grey) at ₹92-97 per kg and 30s recycled PC yarn (Grey) at ₹135-145 per kg. Comber prices were hovering at ₹133-135 per kg. Recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) was noted at ₹74-77 per kg.

Cotton prices in north India increased due to limited arrivals. Trade sources revealed that there were no arrivals in Punjab owing to a local strike. Limited cotton was received in other states of north India, totalling 8,500 bales of 170 kg. The state-wise breakdown showed 5,000 bales in Haryana, 1,500 in upper Rajasthan, and 2,000 in lower Rajasthan. Cotton was priced between ₹6,225 and ₹6,260 per maund of 37.2 kg across all north Indian states.
