  • Pakistan has reported an early and heavy inflow of cotton, specifically in Sindh province, during July 2023, recording an arrival of 14.28 lakh bales.
  • The figure for July represents 28.57 per cent of the previous season's total arrivals.
  • Sindh alone received 10.40 lakh bales, amounting to 55.43 per cent of the province's total arrival in the previous season.
Pakistan has not only reported early arrivals of cotton during the month of July this year but also noted a high inflow of new arrivals, specifically in Sindh province. The country recorded cotton arrival of 14.28 lakh bales weighing 170 kg each. Sindh accounted for 10.40 lakh bales in July, which is 55.43 per cent of the province’s total arrival of 18.76 lakh bales in the previous season, according to the special monthly report on cotton arrival in Pakistan's factories as of August 1, 2023, released by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA).

The PCGA had to start collecting arrival data in July 2023 because of the heavy arrival of cotton. In 2022, this process commenced in August. Usually, Pakistan’s cotton marketing season begins in August when the proper arrival of the crop starts. However, July 2023, which falls under the previous season, saw an arrival of 14.28 lakh bales, accounting for 28.57 per cent of the previous season’s total arrival of 49.05 lakh bales.

Last year, 34.14 per cent of Pakistan’s cotton crop was wiped out due to heavy rains and floods, specifically in Sindh. Pakistan’s Punjab province recorded cotton arrival of 3.88 lakh bales in July 2023.

During the last season, 2022-23, the total cotton arrival declined by 34.14 per cent to 49.05 lakh bales. The arrival was 74.41 lakh bales in the preceding year 2021-22. Sindh province had witnessed a steep drop of 46.57 per cent from 35.13 lakh bales of 2021-22. In Punjab, cotton arrival was 22.9 per cent lower at 30.28 lakh bales in 2022-23 against 39.27 lakh bales of the preceding year.
