The PCGA had to start collecting arrival data in July 2023 because of the heavy arrival of cotton. In 2022, this process commenced in August. Usually, Pakistan’s cotton marketing season begins in August when the proper arrival of the crop starts. However, July 2023, which falls under the previous season, saw an arrival of 14.28 lakh bales, accounting for 28.57 per cent of the previous season’s total arrival of 49.05 lakh bales.
Last year, 34.14 per cent of Pakistan’s cotton crop was wiped out due to heavy rains and floods, specifically in Sindh. Pakistan’s Punjab province recorded cotton arrival of 3.88 lakh bales in July 2023.
During the last season, 2022-23, the total cotton arrival declined by 34.14 per cent to 49.05 lakh bales. The arrival was 74.41 lakh bales in the preceding year 2021-22. Sindh province had witnessed a steep drop of 46.57 per cent from 35.13 lakh bales of 2021-22. In Punjab, cotton arrival was 22.9 per cent lower at 30.28 lakh bales in 2022-23 against 39.27 lakh bales of the preceding year.
