Persian Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (PGPIC) has begun the construction of a mega petrochemical complex at Mahshahr Petrochemical Special Economic Zone in southwestern Iran. The plant will feature an olefin unit with production capacity of 1.26 tons of ethylene and 420,000 tons of propylene. It is expected to create direct jobs for 5,000 people.

The plant will also house five polymer units including a polypropylene unit, a monoethylene glycol (MEG) unit, a butadiene unit, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) unit and two units of high-density polyethylene (HDP), said Iranian media reports quoting PGPIC MD Jafar Rabiei.

The construction of the plant will take place in two phases. The olefin unit will be built in the first phase, while the rest will be constructed in the second phase.

PGPIC has collaborated with Arvand petrochemical and Bandar Imam for the mega project.

Rabiei also said that another mega complex will be constructed in Assaluyeh sometime in the near future.

All the feed for the Mahshahr Petrochemical Project is produced by PGPIC, which makes it a significant project, according to Rabiei.
