This declaration, as reported by the media, also revealed plans to establish a new regulatory authority aimed at enhancing building infrastructure safety to mitigate structural vulnerabilities and fire hazards.

Speaking as the chief guest at the 9th International Fire Safety and Security Expo at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Dhaka recently, Rahman reportedly emphasised the urgency of this endeavour, highlighting the forthcoming creation of a regulatory body under an act, which would oversee fire prevention initiatives.

In a proactive measure, the government previously unveiled the Bangladesh National Building Code 2020, published in the form of a gazette. This code is set to be enforced by the Bangladesh Building Regulatory Authority (BBRA), comprising five members with expertise in planning, architecture, engineering, law, and civil service.

Rahman expressed optimism that stringent supervision by the BBRA over design approvals and construction activities would lead to enhanced safety standards and minimise fire incidents.

Identifying common causes of fires, Rahman pinpointed electrical short circuits and structural deficiencies, referencing past tragedies like the Rana Plaza collapse. He stressed ongoing efforts to standardise electric cables and address structural flaws through improved planning and enforcement measures.

Rahman also underscored the necessity for collaboration between the government and private sector to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and bolster joint-venture initiatives in fire safety and security.

Meanwhile, Faruque Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), echoed this sentiment, emphasising the critical role of fire safety in enhancing workplace conditions and industrial efficiency.

The Electronics Safety and Security Association of Bangladesh (ESSAB) organised the expo, highlighting the growing importance of fire safety and security in the wake of heightened awareness and recent incidents.

Policy support, capacity building, and stringent quality control mechanisms were highlighted as crucial steps to foster sustainable growth and mitigate economic losses stemming from fire incidents.
