Insights

  • In the first week of the FY25, polyester and viscose yarn prices rose by ₹2-4 per kg in India, influenced by better payment flows and easing concerns over new payment rules.
  • Polyester market benefitted from slow imported supplies, while PC yarn prices dropped due to lower natural fibre costs.
  • Markets in Ludhiana, Surat and Mumbai reported varied trends.
Polyester and viscose yarn prices improved in the first week of the new fiscal 2024-25 (April-March) by ₹2-4 per kg in various markets of India. Traders mentioned that a better payment flow to micro and small enterprises in the last days of the previous fiscal and eased concerns regarding the new payment rule spurred the buying of manmade yarn.

The polyester yarn market also found support from the slow arrival of imported supplies due to the implementation of the Quality Control Order (QCO). The market is expected to remain bullish, at least in the near future. However, polyester-cotton (PC) yarn noted a bearish tone because of the ease in natural fibre prices.

The Ludhiana market witnessed a price rise in polyester spun yarn, but the price of PC yarn decreased. Polyester spun yarn increased by ₹3-4 per kg. However, PC yarn eased by ₹2 per kg in the market. A trader from the Ludhiana market told Fibre2Fashion, “Buyers' approach changed in the new fiscal. They have come for fresh buying. Easy liquidity also pushed up buying in polyester spun yarn. But PC yarn eased due to the weak trend in cotton prices.”

In Ludhiana, 30 count PC combed yarn (48/52) traded at ₹216-226 (approximately $2.59-2.71) per kg (GST inclusive); 30 count PC carded yarn (65/35) at ₹202-212 (approximately $2.42-2.54) per kg; 20 PC (100 per cent recycled PSF) at ₹103-109 (approximately $1.23-1.31) per kg; 30 count polyester spun at ₹155-161 (approximately $1.86-1.93) per kg (GST inclusive); and recycled polyester fibre (PET bottle fibre) at ₹74-76 (approximately $0.89-0.91) per kg, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro.

The Surat market also noted an upward trend in polyester spun yarn and viscose yarn prices. A trader from the Surat market told F2F, “The market witnessed better demand since the last week of the previous year. Payment flow improved due to the clearance of outstanding dues by companies to micro and small businesses. Low imports of polyester yarn also supported it.”

In Surat, prices gained ₹2-3 per kg due to higher demand and positive tone. In this market, 30 count polyester spun yarn was traded at ₹140-143 (approximately $1.68-1.71) per kg (GST extra); 40 count poly spun yarn at ₹152-154 (approximately $1.82-1.85) per kg; 30 viscose compact yarn (local) at ₹198-202 (approximately $2.37-2.44) per kg (GST extra).

In the Mumbai market, viscose ring spun yarn prices also traded higher by ₹2 per kg. A trader from Mumbai explained that higher prices in polyester yarn attracted mills to switch their production. This may lead to a short supply of viscose yarn. Therefore, viscose yarn also gained in the market. Slow imports from the foreign market also led to thin stock in the value chain. Imported 30 count viscose vertex yarn was priced at ₹182-188 (approximately $2.18-2.25) per kg; and local 30 count ring-spun viscose yarn at ₹188-192 (approximately $2.25-2.30) per kg in this market, as per TexPro.

Cotton prices in north India eased by ₹25-40 per maund of 37.2 kg. Traders said that a bearish tone in ICE cotton and weak demand from spinning mills were the reasons for the losses in the natural fibre. ICE cotton also noted weak sentiments. Traders mentioned that cotton arrival slowed down due to the end of the season, but this could not support cotton prices.

Today's arrivals were noted at 4,500 bales of 170 kg. State-wise arrivals were as follows: 500 bales in Punjab, 2,000 bales in Haryana, 1,500 bales in upper Rajasthan, and 500 bales in lower Rajasthan. Cotton prices in Punjab ranged from ₹6,000 to ₹6,050 (approximately $71.91-72.51) per maund of 37.2 kg, while in Haryana, prices ranged from ₹5,950 to ₹6,050 (approximately $71.31-72.51). In upper Rajasthan, cotton was priced between ₹5,875 and ₹6,075 (approximately $70.42-72.81) per maund. Bikaner line cotton sold for ₹6,050 to ₹6,100 (approximately $72.51-73.11) per maund. In lower Rajasthan, cotton was priced at ₹57,500 to ₹59,500 (approximately $689.17-713.14) per candy of 356 kg.
