Setting national min wage required for decent pay in Bangladesh: Study

Setting a national minimum wage in Bangladesh to ensure decent wages for all workers, a democratic selection process of representatives in the Minimum Wage Board, and regular and timely review of minimum wages are part of recommendations of a new study.

Out of the 42 formal sectors across the country, 20 (47.6 per cent) have not seen any regular wage increase in the last six to 40 years, the study revealed.

Without clear calculations and economic justifications, the wage-setting process may lack transparency and fairness, which could lead to dissatisfaction among both workers and employers, the study report said.

The findings of the study were recently presented at a roundtable in Dhaka organised by the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS), domestic media outlets reported.

Though the wage announcement is supposed to come within six months of the formation of the wage board, it takes double or triple or even more time, the study noted.

Mostafiz Ahmed, associate professor at the department of social work at Jagannath University, shared the findings.
