Peru's culture ministry recently received 79 finely-weaved textile items from the pre-Inca Paracas culture as repatriation from Sweden. These were part of the second shipping agreed upon by the two sides in 2014 for the recovery of textile pieces that were acquired by the Municipal Museum of Gothenburg back in 1935. The first batch had arrived in June 2014.
Representatives from the Peruvian ministry and the Swedish Government were present at the return ceremony, which featured the symbolic return of five Paracas textiles dating from the 500 BCE to 200 CE period, according to a Peruvian news agency report.Peru's culture ministry recently received 79 finely-weaved textile items from the pre-Inca Paracas culture as repatriation from Sweden. The batch includes mantles, uncus (tunics), cloths and shawls characterized by their unique value, composition, colours and weaving techniques using cotton and vicuña wool.
The items will be kept by the ministry’s general directorate of museums for conservation and display in 2018. Sweden is due to return an additional 60 textile items by 2021. (DS)
