Switzerland-based bluesign has introduced an initiative titled ‘bluesign Denim: A Sustainable and Responsible Choice’ that marks a significant shift towards cleaner chemistry and eco-friendly production. The move is expected to be a major advancement in sustainable and responsible production practices in the fashion industry.

bluesign Denim is an optimal choice for consumers who place environmental sustainability at the heart of their purchasing decisions. The programme seeks to drastically minimise the textile industry’s negative impact on both people and the environment by championing clean production practices, the company said in a press release.

The bluesign team works intimately with denim partners, striving to remove harmful elements and ensure sustainability throughout the manufacturing process. The company aims to deliver the world’s cleanest denim, assuring safety for the workforce, the environment, and consumers.

bluesign, a global solution provider for sustainable textile industry, has been on the scene since 2000. It has introduced an innovative ‘Input Stream Management System’ to the textile and related industries, amassing more than 750 system partners worldwide. A subsidiary of the SGS Group since 2008, the firm has a global presence with its headquarters in St Gallen, Switzerland, and offices spanning from Germany to Guatemala.

The bluesign system focuses on several key areas, including consumer safety, occupational health and safety, environmental factors (water and air emissions, waste, soil), and resources (energy, water, chemicals, and raw materials). It aims to minimise risk, reduce impact, protect people and the environment, and increase resource productivity.

To join the bluesign initiative, denim fabric manufacturers and denim laundries must meet certain criteria, such as undergoing a bluesign assessment, becoming a bluesign system partner, and using bluesign approved chemistry.
