Taiwan textile firms eye robust orders at Oct Taipei show

Taiwanese textile firms expect to sign orders worth $85 million at the Taipei Innovative Textile Show scheduled from October 16 to 18, as demand grows for higher-priced functional textiles used mostly in sports and outdoor apparel, according to the Taiwan Textile Federation (TTF). That would be about 21 per cent more over last year’s order worth $70 million.

The country witnessed a 2 per cent annual growth in textile exports to $5.89 billion from January to July this year, and the full-year increase could be larger, as the traditional peak season falls in the second half, a report in a Taipei daily quoted the federation as saying.

According to TTF president Justin Huang, smart medical apparel and army clothing are the two biggest markets for new functional textiles. Ruentex Industries Ltd earlier this year landed an order to supply 60 million units of smart medical clothes equipped with sensors that measure blood pressure and heartbeat.

Sports apparel, outdoor wear and sports shoes have been the main sources of revenue for local textile makers.

Taiwanese textile manufacturers supply two-fifths of materials used in Nike shoes and one-fifth of materials for Adidas AG shoes, TTF data showed.

Huang felt Taiwanese textile makers will benefit from the US-China trade dispute in the long run as major global retailers seek to relocate their Chinese plants to Southeast Asian and African nations or India to circumvent new US import tariffs. (DS)
