The tariffs on Mexico and Canada will stay in place till they clamp down on drugs and migrants illegally crossing the border, Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
"Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem," he was quoted as saying by US media outlets. "It is time for them to pay a very big price!"
In another post, Trump attacked Beijing for not doing enough on the latter’s promise to award death penalty to those caught dealing with fentanyl.
During his election campaign, Trump threatened Mexico and China with tariffs of up to 100 per cent, if he deemed those necessary. In 2018, he had cited national security justifications to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.
Trump has also said he will end China's most-favoured-nation trading status with the United States.
