Team Canada trade mission to visit India in Oct 2023

The decision was arrived at in Ottawa, where Indian commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal and Ng co-chaired the sixth India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment (MDTI) on May 8.

The ministers discussed appropriate mechanisms to discuss talent and innovation partnership to strengthen the bilateral innovation ecosystem, an official release said.

They emphasised enhancing cooperation in sectors like clean technologies for infrastructure development, critical minerals, electric vehicles and batteries, renewable energy/hydrogen and artificial intelligence.

Ng expressed her support for India as the G20 chair and the priorities pursued by India in the G20 Trade and Investment Working Group. The G-20 Trade and Investment Ministerial meeting is scheduled to be held in India in August this year.

While reviewing the progress of seven rounds of negotiations for a planned bilateral free trade agreement, they reaffirmed that the early progress trade agreement (EPTA) would cover high-level commitments in goods, services, investment, rules of origin, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade and dispute settlement.

India-Canada bilateral trade in goods reached about $8.2 billion in 2022, registering 25 per cent growth over the 2021 figure.
